A Story

Bear PhotoWhat is the most important aspect of sales? Always having a plan, goals and a direction! Without a roadmap you can easily lose your way…there are too many distractions!

This became obvious to me on my first hiking trip in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming. I was excited, ready to get going and prepared…or at least I thought! Heading out into the western wilderness is a little different than I imagined. There were more possibilities for wildlife encounters…the Great Grizzly, the Grey Wolf, and not to forget the very large American Bison!

One could be so easily distracted by trying to catch a glimpse of the Bald Eagle, that the trail splits could become dangerous when trying to find your way back. It’s also a bit more harrowing when you see a sign posted warning that Grizzlies have made this trail their home!

And by the way…which way do we head now? I thought we came down this trail before?

As time went by and the evening settled in- it became clear that a few important elements of planning were overlooked on our first big hike! A good map, a compass, flashlight and a cylinder of Bear spray! We made it out okay, but not without a few scares, many wrong turns and potentially a dangerous night alone in the mountains!

The Lesson

A grim reminder of what it is like to lose one’s way! The consequences are not always so serious when we get off track a day or two a week…but when adding up the lost time, it is enormous and has a significant impact on our pipeline, revenues and results!

So how are you planning your days? What next steps will you take to make sure that you are on the right path and heading in the right direction…toward your goals?
